which is better, a wood or plastic kubotan (the wooden one or the metal looking one?)?

I think you are missing the point here. The value is in your ability to use it effectively, not in which material it is made from. Unless you have been trained in how to use it, it will not matter anyway. Personally I prefer just a 1/2" diameter piece of hardwood dowel cut to 6" in length. It does not look like a weapon, which is an advantage. Everyone that sees the commercial Kubotan knows exactly what it is. I like the fact that no one realizes what mine is until it is to late. Besides it is not considered a weapon legally. That can prevent me from having to ever explain why I carry it. In case you don't already know, the Kubotan is nothing more than commercial marketing of a weapon that has been around a long time. In its original form it is known as a Yawara in Japan.
