What type of martial art should I take for street/defense/every day fights?
I've been looking in Taekwondoe, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Muay Thai, MMA, Shao lin, kick boxing, karate but everyone has different views and I don't have the time or money to experiment. I want a fighting style that is quick yet powerful and could be used for every day fights, either just messing around with family or serious street fights. I was watching some videos on youtube and taekwondoe looks quick and powerful and I do have long legs, yet people claim it is very predictable when you are about to kick and easy to dodge and counter. Brazilian Ju Jitsu I heard is only good for mat fights since if on the street or other surfaces you will kill your elbows and trying to pin is inconvenient.
any of those martial arts are good. remember that it is not about the martial art, it is about the fighter. many beginner martial artists will berate Taekwondo, but do you think they would really want to be in a serious fight with a member of the korean army who is trained to fight with taekwondo?
BJJ DOES work on hard surfaces. the only problem is that it is only good 1 on 1. if two people attack you and you're messing around with one of them on the ground, the other one isn't just going to stand there. he'll be kicking the crap out of your head. in multiple attacker scenarios, it is usually better to stay standing, and BJJ almost always goes to the ground.
Muay Thai is still very traditional, but it is also an intense martial art that focuses heavily on real world application, and muay thai fighters usually aren't fighting for points in competitions (meaning they try to inflict real damage). that might be good for you
really, for street fighting, you need to find an instructor who has real street fighting experience. mine for example, has the scars to prove it.
