What are the differences betwwen Shotokan and Shukokai / Shito-ryu Karate?
Ive just started up Karate again after 8 years, and i remember my old Dojo taught Shotokan style, but new ownership, governing body etc, and new instructors, now teach Shukokai / Shito-ryu.
Just wondering what the difference between them are.

shukokai is a branch of shito ryu
shito ryu was founded by kenwa mabuni sensei, a student of master itosu.
shito ryu is one of the 4 main styles of karate, along with shotokan. all styles of karate are bot striking and grappling, stand up and ground.
shito ryu is a short to mid range were as shotokan is mid to long range. in shito ryu there is over 50 kata where as shotokan has 26. the kata define the style all your tactics, tecnques, footwork, etc are found in your kata, kata is the manual to the system. shoto ryu combines the kata og shotokan and goju ryu. in shito ryu your shoulders are square when striking and blocking unlike shotokan, where you shoulders are turned to the side during blocking. shito ryu also use a double hip action during techniques.
